It's One Way to Score [ September 10, 2005, 1:43 pm ]

When the alarm went off this morning I did not want to get up. Sleep had been elusive, my mind was working overtime (on a very, very, very good thing for once) and the thunderstorm played a significant role in keeping me from getting what precious few hours of rest that I'd allotted. Nonetheless, I'd made a promise to my dear Katie and I was determined to follow through, come hell, high water or lack of sleep. I brewed a cup of minty tea and dragged my duff to the NMU campus.

And thus, at 10:16 am on a hazy Saturday morning, I lost my rugby virginity.

Admittedly, if my friends had been there, there would have been snarkiness galore. I had no idea what was going on. There was running and violence and plays that went on for what seemed like ages. It looked kind of homo-erotic, what with girls grabbing each other and throwing each other around in the dirt. Hell, I'd wager that at least one porn movie starts that way.

But since I'd come on my own, I settled in and watched the carnage. I pretended to know what was going on and cheered when the other people cheered. I really cheered when Katie got the ball and made a mad dash through--not past, through--two girls who looked like they'd feasted on steroids. I woo-woo'd when NMU got a goal, even though I had no idea how many points it was worth. And I laughed when I heard the other spectators asking what the hell the score was--none of us had a clue.

That didn't deter from my enjoyment though. When Katie took the field, I felt a surge of pride. The same surge I feel when Wifey belts it out onstage or Amanda talks about how well a presentation went or Chrissy mentions how something went her way at work. Katie looked fierce and played even moreso.

It was well worth the wake-up call to see her play her heart out. And to lose my rugby virginity. What a fine way to spend a Saturday morning.

Ciao, dahling!
