Great Moments in Karaoke [ January 12, 2005, 11:12 pm ]

On the way to work tonight, I heard R.Kelly's "This is How We Do It" on the radio. Besides the fact that it amused me about how the UP is, like, a decade behind on music trends, it also got me thinking about some karaoke moments from 2004.

2004 was a good year--if only because it was the year that my friends and I discovered how entertaining karaoke truly is......

Here are some of the great moments for Karaokeing with Krissy:

* the speedo boys during "I want your sex": First off, I didn't know the words to that song, but Erin M. convinced me to "back her up." That consisted of me screaming "SEX" and "PORNOGRAPHY" into the microphone. I was slightly distracted by the fact that three boys in full-body Speedos were humping both me and Erin as well as the karaoke monitor.

* Proud Mary with Bucky and Christy: He's the karaoke king, Chirsty and I were back up. I didn't know what I was doing, but unlike with "Sex" I caught on quickly. By the middle of the song, Christy and I had coordinated moves and on-key voices (that's actually rare). We had all the Yoopers rocking to this song. Of course, Yoopers enjoy any old or country songs.

* Pants-dropper at Flannigans: Not once, but twice, a guy was so enraptured with my posse's singing that he felt the urge to drop trou in front of us and the crowd. The second time, he jumped on-stage and bump-n-grinded with us until the owner of the bar threatened to kick him out. And all this happened in front of his mom. While this was entertaining, I'm a little bitter that he stole my thunder when I actually sang the word "tit" from "Greased Lightning." Sigh.

* Brett "schools" the crowd: him and a few other friends sang "This is How We Do It." The others had no clue how to do the rap. Brett did. He schooled us all on how white boys should karaoke-rap to early-90s music. A proud moment for him. Bravo.

* Middle-age Woman Hits on Brett: another night at My Place (most of our karaoke nights from early '04 were there), some 40-somethings were averting mid-life crises by drinking themselves into oblivion. One became fond of Brett and joined him on-stage as he sang "Tainted Love" with a group of us. She grabbed his butt, he clawed my arm in a desperate attempt to do...something--probably to prove that he was with people his own age. They shared a mic. And a moment. And lucky for all of us, it's' captured on film. Haha.

* Grandpa hits on Katie A: while this didn't happen as we karaoked, it happened at a karaoke bar. This unassuming-looking old (age? late-70s) guy asked Katie to dance, then proceeded to try to grab her ass and grind with her as she made faces at us to help her out. What were we supposed to do? Kung-fu kick the guy? Instead we almost fell off of our chairs laughing. And I took pictures.

* Wave the Fruit Fly Flag Proudly: a guy offended us by using the word "gay" inappropriately at Flanigans one night. I stood up to him, two friends backed me up. He got intimidated and tried to talk shit about us to other tables. To prove our loyalty to Joe, Ryan and the rest of our gay friends, we rushed to the stage and sang "True Colors." Homophobe exited before the opening verse was done.

* Material Girl with Katie A: we submitted this request three times and were ignored each time. We were convinced that the dj hated either us or the song or both. Finally one night, we drunkenly begged him to let us sing it. He finally relented--probably because there was only a couple dozen people in the joint. We rocked it SO hard, though. A triumph...at least in my mind.

Here's hoping that more great moments will come during this semester.

Ciao, dahling!
